About us

Our primary aim with dog sledding is to create unforgettable experiences that inspire a deeper connection with nature, foster meaningful bonds with our canine companions, and cultivate a sense of adventure and personal growth in our guests.

A Lifestyle Born from Passion

Get to know the dedicated family and spirited dogs that make Riverland Husky an unforgettable experience. Founded in 2016 by Tom Vang, his wife Kirsti Karlsen, and their daughter Uma, our farm and kennel in the picturesque Reisa Valley have since been their home and the heart of our operation.

For Tom, life revolves around his love for dogs and the exhilarating world of dog sledding. Being a musher is more than just a profession – it's a way of life. The creation of Riverland Husky allowed Tom to pursue his passion for dog sledding races while sharing this thrilling activity with others.

As an experienced musher, Tom has participated in numerous races, including the Troms Quest in Målselv and the long-distance Bergebyløpet in Finnmark. His ultimate goal is to compete in the renowned Finnmarksløpet, training his dogs tirelessly to prepare for this challenging race.

Our Canine Family

Riverland Husky is home to 30 delightful Alaskan Huskies, ranging from small, adorable puppies to trained racing dogs. These loving canines are an integral part of our family and enjoy the company of people, cuddles, and adventures. Alaskan Huskies are known for their calm demeanor, making them great with children.

Bred for speed, endurance, and boundless energy, these dogs thrive in cooler climates, such as Reisa Valley's Arctic environment. Their unique qualities make them the ideal companions for sled dog adventures.

Our philosophy

At the core of our philosophy is the belief that harmony with nature, respect for our canine companions, and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage can lead to transformative experiences and lasting connections. We recognize the incredible abilities and dedication of our Alaskan Huskies, and we are committed to providing the highest level of care, training, and support to ensure their health and happiness. By treating our canine team members with love, respect, and compassion, we cultivate a sense of camaraderie that transcends the boundaries between species and elevates our collective experience.

Our aim

We strive to promote responsible tourism, environmental stewardship, and cultural appreciation, ensuring that the beauty and integrity of the natural world and the rich heritage of dog sledding are preserved for generations to come.

Through our dog sledding expeditions, we aspire to provide our guests with the opportunity to experience the breathtaking wilderness in an eco-friendly and immersive way. By venturing into remote, pristine areas that remain untouched by modern development, we hope to inspire a sense of awe, respect, and love for the natural world, encouraging our guests to become active participants in its conservation.

Ultimately, our goal is to create transformative experiences that leave a lasting impact on our guests, instilling in them a newfound love for the great outdoors, a deep appreciation for our canine companions, and an enduring sense of adventure that will enrich their lives long after they have returned home.

Drawing Inspiration from a Legendary Dog Racer

At Riverland Husky, we strive to carry on the legacy of the legendary dog racer, Leonhard Seppala. As a Norwegian native who became a gold miner in Alaska, Seppala achieved numerous victories in prestigious races like The All-Alaska Sweepstake. He is especially renowned for his role in the 1925 Nome Serum Run, where he and his team of dogs helped save countless lives by delivering crucial diphtheria serum to Nome.

Seppala's grandparents on his father's side immigrated to Norway in the mid-1800s, and his parents were both born in the Arctic regions of Scandinavia. This shared heritage with our own team at Riverland Husky in Reisa Valley connects us to Seppala's story and strengthens our passion for dog sledding.

As we continue to grow and share the joy of dog sledding with others, we look to Leonhard Seppala's remarkable journey as an inspiration. By honoring his dedication to the sport and the special bond between humans and sled dogs, we hope to keep his spirit alive and contribute to the rich history of dog sledding in the Arctic regions.
